Diabetes Research Training Program Overview

Diabetes (type 1 and type 2) and its complications are leading causes of morbidity and mortality in the US and this is particularly true in underserved communities, where type 2 diabetes is one of the most severe public health challenges in Arizona, with its large Latino community. Because the University of Arizona is a state institution, and one of a few that also are Hispanic Serving Institutions, we believe that excellence in understanding the mechanisms underlying diabetes and, importantly, how to translate these finding effectively in community-engaged research are a mandate.

The Diabetes Research Training Program (DRTP) is a T32 Ruth L. Kirschstein Institutional National Research Service Award from the National Institute of Health. The DRTP will provide trainees in both Tucson and Phoenix, across UA, ASU, and NIDDK, with opportunities to address diabetes research projects by delivering a contemporary and collaborative didactic research experience and professional development to train and mentor the next generation of diabetes researchers.
